Help end the public use of fireworks

Last week we called upon the residents of Edinburgh to spread the word about the consultation taking place to seriously restrict the public use of fireworks in Edinburgh.

Many other areas in Scotland have now launched consultations which could create many more Firework Control Zones.

We’re now asking that all residents of Glasgow turn their attention to the consultation in which they are being given the chance to express their views on implementing firework control zones that would further prohibit the public use of fireworks in parts of Glasgow.
Firework control zone applications go to public consultation - Glasgow City Council

Further to this, a recent motion by Glasgow City Council has also separately asked whether it is possible to designate the whole of the Glasgow City area as a fireworks control zone. Please support this initiative by including in any submissions that rather than several different zones it would be much more effective to bring the whole of the City of Glasgow under a Firework Control Zone.

CLICK HERE to access the consultation page, and please be sure to share and encourage other Glaswegians to participate!

The recent Fireworks and Pyrotechnics Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 legislation grants local authorities discretionary power to introduce the control zones, which would make it a criminal offence to ignite a firework within its boundary or to fire or throw a firework into a zone.

As noted in STV news, "people would still be able to go to officially organised firework displays but it would be illegal to set them off at home under new rules."

After many years of campaigning for a ban on fireworks, this is a big step forward, and ensuring there is adequate public support to make this happen is essential.

The consultation is open until 18 August, so if Glasgow is your home, we urge you to take a moment to complete and submit your views, and share with others you know in Glasgow, asking them to do the same.

These measures take us ever closer to our ultimate goal of seeing the distress and suffering caused by fireworks become a thing of the past. After I nearly lost my dog when unexpected fireworks on a random evening sent her running in fear, I say it can't happen soon enough!

We're very grateful for all stories that are shared with us about how fireworks have negatively impacted your loved ones, be they pets or people, and encourage others to do the same. Together, we really can see the welfare of animals take precedence over fireworks.
