Unbound The Greyhound

On Saturday 10th June, a group of 9 animal welfare charities launched their joint campaign, entitled Unbound the Greyhound.

Building on the success of Scotland Against Greyhound Exploitation (SAGE)’s petition to end Greyhound racing in Scotland, which amassed more than 27,000 signatures and is currently under consideration in the Rural Affairs and Islands Committee of the Scottish Parliament, the coalition was formed to help continue to raise public support and apply pressure to the Government.

The coalition consists of SAGE, OneKind (who are coordinating the campaign), Say No To Greyhound Racing In Scotland, the League Against Cruel Sports, Hope Rescue Wales, Grey2K USA, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and the All Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare as well as, of course, Animal Concern.

Mark Ruskell MSP is coordinating the ministerial side to this campaign, putting plans in place for a Member’s Bill to be progressed through Scottish Parliament.

To celebrate the launch, we got together with representatives from SAGE and OneKind in Buchanan Street, Glasgow to raise awareness about the campaign and collect signatures for an open letter from all nine charities in the coalition to Cabinet Secretary Mairi Gougeon. The letter expresses our collective dismay at the inherent risks and cruelty to the ‘sport’ of Greyhound racing, urging the Government to put an end to the suffering of countless dogs for profit.

You can read (and sign) the letter here.

And you can read more about the evils of the Greyhound racing industry at our campaign page here.
